Exhibition: Faces for Human Rights Arrives in Ávila
With the organization of The Catholic University of Ávila and International Solidarity for Human Rights, and the collaboration of the City Council of Avila and The Friends Association of the Avila Way, we join forces to present the cultural project ‘Human Rights in Ávila’, which will celebrate the 76th Anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in December.
Ávila, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (since 1985) and recently designated Human Rights Friendly City 2024 by the American organization International Solidarity for Human Rights (ISHR), will host the iconic “Faces for Human Rights” exhibition. This exhibit, conceived by renowned New York artist Wilma Bulkin Siegel, showcases 30 striking portraits of individuals who have dedicated their lives to defending and promoting human rights**, leaving an indelible legacy in the fight for justice, equality, and dignity.
The project aims to highlight art and education as fundamental tools for reflecting and acting in favor of human rights, especially at a time when, as UCAV Rector María del Rosario Sáez Yuguero noted, **”society faces an ethical and moral setback against the advance of utilitarianism.”
Art, Awareness, and Education: A Transformative Journey
Faces for Human Rights is not just an artistic exhibition but a powerful call to action. Each portrait tells the story of a human rights defender, inviting the viewer to connect with their struggle, resilience, and hope. Wilma Bulkin Siegel, a physician and artist, captures vibrant humanity in these works, conveying the essence of these figures’ commitment to universal values.
The exhibition is also designed as an educational tool. It is expected to attract visits from primary, secondary, and university students, who will participate in educational activities designed to deepen their understanding of human rights and their importance in today’s society.
A Diverse Cultural Program in Defense of Human Rights
The exhibition will be the central focus of a broad program of activities throughout December in Ávila, including:
December 3rd:

Ávila: A Model of Commitment to Human Rights
Ávila Mayor Jesús Manuel Sánchez Cabrera emphasized that the recognition granted by ISHRIGHTS reflects the city’s ongoing commitment to promoting education, culture, and art as pillars for fostering peace and understanding. **”We cannot lower our guard; we must all work to ensure that human rights remain valid and a reality for all,”** he stressed.
The Faces for Human Rights exhibition is an open invitation for Ávila’s citizens and visitors to reflect on their role in defending fundamental rights. This exhibition, along with complementary activities, offers a transformative experience that reinforces the relevance of human rights in today’s world.
